We thought you might be interested in learning more about what Yukon Energy is doing to meet the electrical needs of all Yukoners now and into the future. Our latest strategic plan lays out our priorities for the next two years. You can read the full plan. In a nutshell, here are the four main areas we are working on:
Reliable Power. Our goal is to make our system more efficient and to have fewer power outages. Two thirds of the money we’ll be spending on equipment over the next 5 years will be to improve our reliability.
One major piece of work will be to join the Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro grid with the Mayo-Dawson grid. That way, we can manage them both as single units to help balance the whole system. Another is to work with Yukon Electrical to find ways to lessen the impacts of power outages.
Meet future demand with clean power. As Yukoners need more electricity, we want to provide it with clean, renewable energy that works well with our hydro system. We are looking at all sources of clean energy, including wind, geo-thermal and additional hydro. Our goal is burn as little diesel fuel as necessary for power generation.
Establish a buffer of surplus renewable energy. We need to make sure the Yukon has more than just the minimum of electricity that it requires. So we’re planning on a buffer of energy projects that are ready to go as soon as we need them. We won’t build them in advance, but as soon as they are needed, we can take them “off the shelf” and put them to work.
Work with customers to better meet future energy needs. We want to involve all Yukoners in helping to create a clean energy future. One of our goals is to understand the needs of our commercial clients. Another goal is to continue to find ways to work with First Nations and the private sector on energy projects.
We are working with Yukon Electrical Company Ltd. and the Yukon government to develop policies for independent power producers. We are also working on an energy conservation program that will benefit all Yukoners. Download the 2010-2012 Strategic Plan
