Southern Lakes Water Levels

Today's question: Are current water levels posted for each of the Southern Lakes? If so, where can I find them? If Yukon Energy doesn't post the levels, does the territorial government? Thanks.

Thanks for the question. During the summer months, we regularly post water levels for Marsh Lake on our website. We purchase this information from the Water Survey of Canada, which has water gauges on a number of the Southern Lakes, including Marsh, Tagish, Bennett and Atlin. Levels for Atlin are available in real time, but for Tagish and Bennett they are not. If you need current water data for Tagish or Bennett, I suggest you contact the Water Survey of Canada for more information.

As an aside, this year the water on Marsh Lake peaked on August 11 at 656.597 metres above sea level, or slightly below 2004 levels when some people in the Southern Lakes started experiencing flooding problems. We have found that in the summer when the lakes are rising, water levels at Bennett and Tagish are slightly higher than at Marsh. In the fall, the levels tend to be approximately the same.
