In 1999, Ducks Unlimited Canada began a project aimed at gathering information that would help better understand key areas of the Yukon's boreal forest. The boreal forest is home to some 13 million breeding ducks and other wildlife, and is also a resting and feeding point for birds en route to and from breeding areas further north. This project covered 3.8 million hectares of the southern Yukon—an area that is important for its wildlife, recreational and cultural values. It is also a region that is experiencing increased demands on the land and water resources. Whitehorse, the Yukon's largest city, is located in the heart of this region, and is where Yukon Energy has its largest hydroelectric facility.
Yukon Energy recognized the value of collecting information to monitor waterfowl populations in this region over the long term. To this end, Yukon Energy entered into a five-year partnership agreement with Ducks Unlimited, starting in 2003. For every dollar invested by our company, the non-profit group committed to match it with at least four dollars. Yukon Energy, together with our parent the Yukon Development Corporation, committed $50,000 for each year of the five-year agreement.
This money has been used to do mapping, water chemistry analysis, waterfowl habitat, and population research and monitoring. This partnership arrangement between Yukon Energy and Ducks Unlimited is another example of our strong commitment to the environment.
