Healthy Chinook salmon populations are extremely important to the Yukon. Yukon Energy contributed to a project aimed at improving the habitat of young Chinook salmon in the Mayo area. The project is an example of our strong commitment to environmentally-sound practices and our desire to support sustainable development in the territory.
The First Nation of Na-cho Nyak Dun spearheaded the salmon enhancement project, which saw a number of small channels re-built along the lower Mayo River. These channels or tributary streams will provide a safe place for juvenile salmon to spend the first year of their lives before heading off to the Bering Sea, and will give the young salmon a better chance at survival.
Now that the channels are constructed, the First Nation will monitor the juvenile salmon to record the effectiveness of the project. Photos below show pre- and post-construction of channels.
