Mayo Salmon Enhancement

Healthy Chinook salmon populations are extremely important to the Yukon. Yukon Energy has contributed to a project aimed at improving the habitat of young Chinook salmon in the Mayo area. The project is an example of our strong commitment to environmentally-sound practices and our desire to support sustainable development in the territory.

The Nacho Nyak Dun First Nation spearheaded the salmon enhancement project, which saw a number of small channels re-built along the lower Mayo River. These channels or tributary streams will provide a safe place for juvenile salmon to spend the first year of their lives before heading off to the Bering Sea, and will give the young salmon a better chance at survival.

Now that the channels are constructed, members of the Nacho Nyak Dun First Nation will monitor the juvenile salmon to record the effectiveness of the project. Photos below show pre- and post-construction of channels.
