Yukon Energy Corporation and the Association of Yukon Communities are working together to recognize leadership in sustainable community development. Together we have created an award for initiatives that demonstrate practical, innovative solutions that enhance the environmental sustainability of Yukon’s communities. The award will be given out annually.
In 2007, The City of Whitehorse was the first recipient of the Yukon Sustainable Community Award for the City’s work on the Porter Creek Lower Bench planning and design charrette. The charrette engaged the public and stakeholders in a process to create a sustainable community design for up to 10,000 residents. The resulting plan focused on the protection of significant green spaces, a community designed for pedestrian use, and increased density to reduce urban sprawl. Recommendations also included enhanced energy efficiency guidelines for all buildings, and the use of community energy systems and renewable energy.
2008's award went jointly to the Teslin Tlingit Council and the Village of Teslin for the work they did on completing a community sustainability plan.
See the Association of Yukon Communities web site for more details about this award.
