One of the first signs of spring in the Yukon is the return of the swans and other waterfowl, as they head to their nesting grounds further north. The birds gather by the hundreds at M'Clintock Bay on Marsh Lake in the southern Yukon. The bay is the first open water in the region and offers the birds easy access to food.
Residents and visitors alike come to the Swan Haven Interpretation Centre on M'Clintock Bay to see the trumpeter and tundra swans, Canada geese, northern pintails and wigeons among others. During the peak of the migration (usually mid- to late-April) as many as 2,600 swans have been counted at Swan Haven. If you aren't able to go to Swan Haven yourself, please check out our new Swan-Cam, which operates in April and the first half of May.
Yukon Energy contributes several thousand dollars each year to support Swan Haven and its programs. In 2008, we were also a major sponsor of the 21st Trumpeter Swan Society Conference, held in Whitehorse from April 17 - 19.
