Dam Safety

We care about your safety and want you to understand that the Whitehorse dam and surrounding area is not a playground. Please take care when in the vicinity of Yukon Energy's facilities.

Swimmers

There have been downings and near-drownings in the Yukon River downstream from the Whitehorse dam. Please don't swim in this area.

Dog Walkers and Climbers

The fish ladder intake and structure on Schwatka Lake has very dangerous undercurrents. Don't allow your dog to swim here and don’t climb on the fish ladder.

Windsurfers, Boaters and Aircraft on Schwatka Lake

Stay at least 150 metres away from the back of the dam. Strong currents could pull you into a dangerous situation.

Anglers and Walkers

When Yukon Energy's operators open the spill gates, the water can rise quickly without warning, flooding the banks of the Yukon River in minutes. This is a dangerous place to be – please avoid it. Federal fishing regulations prohibit fishing within 23 metres of the Whitehorse Fishway.

Parents & Guardians

Your children could be seriously injured or killed if they fall into the Yukon River near our facility. We've sometimes noticed youngsters playing in the area and around the fish ladder. Please ask your children to stay away.

Canoeists & Kayakers

Take great care when canoeing or kayaking in the water near our facilities; the water can rise quickly without warning when we open the spill gates. Stay on the right (east) side of the river.
